After graduating from SeaMAP, Corus is now a King County deputy under the tutelage of Sergeant Danny Jameson. His real mentor, though, is Chief Detective Jim Cummins who sees a bright future for Corus as an investigator. Following the events of the first book, Jim and Corus look into two criminal matters: a tri-state drug trafficking operation, and a still-unidentified threat to Corus' safety.
The mysterious enemy lurks in the shadows unseen, but the "Princess" drug ring is vulnerable to police efforts for the first time. The only problem is it's based on the other side of the state. When Jim can't go do recon himself, he sends the department's greenest, yet most-qualified, deputy under the watchful eye of Sergeant Jameson. But Jameson sees the trip as a chance to save his failing marriage, leaving Corus to infiltrate a Walla Walla onion farm on his own to discover if it could be ground zero in a narcotics network.
In Walla Walla, a mysterious object has killed a farmer in his sleep, but when police arrive, whatever crashed through his roof is missing. Agents from the sprawling Tanner Farm next door have collected their errant cargo, but as they attempt to deal with its fallout, cracks in their ranks widen. The Tanners’ innocent daughter, Olive, begins to question the sudden reversal of her parents' fortunes. Migrant laborers identify a heist that could change the lives of their families for generations. And the farming supervisor, drawn ever deeper into the illicit workings of the Tanner operation, is torn by strands of obligation pulling in separate directions.
Corus enters this simmering milieu in sly fashion, but the Tanner Farm is more volatile than he could have anticipated, and he quickly runs into trouble. Meanwhile, the chaos on the farm has provided Corus' ever-watchful enemies an opportunity they've laid in wait for.
And they're coming to Walla Walla.
Trapped between panicked drug smugglers and old enemies, Corus once again steps between the thin gray lines, putting mission before his life and career.
